Paul and I decided to visit our nation's capital for our one year anniversary. After spending so much time abroad this year, we've been eager to explore and learn more about our own country. Ottawa is a city that has captured my attention for a long time and I was eager to return and soak in as much as I could.
Since Paul had never been there before, we made sure to visit all the big destinations. We went on a tour of Rideau Hall (the home of the Governor General), which is surrounded by immaculate grounds and gardens. It's a beautiful place that represents the culture and people of Canada in a magnificent way. My favourite room was called the tent room, which serves as the formal dining room, and has maintained it's original style which was actually made to look like a tent with vertical pink and white stripes. We also went to Centre Block, the Mint, and Byward Market. One of our favourite things was sitting on the lawn of Parliament Hill one night to watch the Mosaika Light Show. It was a very lovely presentation documenting the formation of our country, important events and people, and the true mosaik that it is today. It highlighted each of the provinces and territories as well as many people, both young and old, from around our country, all displayed on the facade of centre block.
Thanks to the beautiful weather, we also had the opportunity to enjoy the parks and trails of this incredibly clean city. We went for a roller blade along the rideau canal and even visited the boat locks.
I loved being surrounded by so much bilingualism, history and culture. Our visit to Ottawa allowed us to learn more about Canada and it's political system, to taste some great food, to enjoy spending time outdoors, and to celebrate our first year anniversary together.
